There was a time in our beautiful country where airports were not a developed as the modern airport. Most had dirt or grass runways and unimproved taxi and parking areas. The tailwheel was uniquely designed to operate from those airports. Today’s airports are improved, however there is still a place for tailwheel airplanes and pilots! Many beautiful parts of this country can only be accessed with tailwheel airplanes capable of operating off of grass and dirt airports. Aerobatic airplanes are often tailwheel airplanes as well.
If you want to explore places off the beaten path, perform aerobatic routines or continue hone your pilots’ skills, then the unique and challenging world of tailwheel flying is for you!
There are no specific time requirements. Adding a tailwheel is an endorsement process and typically takes the average pilot 7 to 10 flight hours to complete. However, if you are looking to obtain your Private Pilot certificate, you can do that in the tailwheel!
